I 1999 ble en av de største gateprotestene i nyere tid avholdt utenfor WTO (Verdens handelsorganisasjon) sitt ministermøte i Seattle. Det var en massiv mobilisering mot de usosiale konsekvensene av økonomisk globalisering og den nyliberale verdensøkonomien. Protestene skapte stor oppmerksomhet rundt disse temaene, og bidro til å danne allianser mellom sosiale organisasjoner over hele verden.

Tirsdag 15. februar viser Attac Studentlag Oslo viser spillefilmen «Battle in Seattle» fra 2007 som tar for seg disse protestene. Vi er så heldige at Helene Bank tar turen innom før å gi et forord om WTO-protestene før filmen. Helene Bank har en lang fartstid i sosiale bevegelser, og har jobbet i For velferdsstaten, som rådgiver for Norges WTO-delegasjon og vært nestleder i Attac. Hun deltok også i Seattle-protestene i 1999, og vil dele sine erfaringer med oss.

Vi lærer sammen om hva protestene mot WTO innebar, og diskuterer hva sosiale bevegelser kan lære av disse protestene i dag. Du er hjertelig velkommen til å bli med, uansett om du har mye på hjertet eller bare vil bli kjent med studentlaget. Vi gleder oss til en hyggelig filmkveld!

In 1999 one of the largest protest in recent times was held outside the minister meeting of WTO in Seattle. It was a massive mobilization against the unsocial consequences of economic globalization and the neoliberal world economy. The protest raised attention around these topics, and contributed to shape alliances between social organisations around the world.

On Tuesday Febuary 15th, Attac Studentlag Oslo is showing the feature film «Battle in Seattle» from 2007 depicting the protests. We are also so lucky that Helene Bank will say some words before the film. She participated in the protests herself in 1999, and has a long experience with social movements.

We learn together about what the protests entailed, and discuss what social movements can learn from these protests today. You are very welcome to join, whether you have a lot you want to discuss or just want to get to know the student assosiation:)
